"...At various points throughout the album, Eight Houses could be described as heavy and dark, desolate and sparse, or hopeful despite it all. Jessica Larrabee has always been great at expressing a gamut of emotions with her voice, but on Eight Houses, the instrumentation is no longer just a backdrop for unbridled feelings. Elements of jazz lend a softness to some tracks, and fuzzy, raw guitar riffs are traded for a more tightly produced, much clearer sound to back Larrabee’s lyrics. “Owl” is an example of how She Keeps Bees manages to mix beauty with grit on Eight Houses. Jazzy horns can be found on the track, and the guitar is a delicate baseline for Larrabee’s voice, which hits like a ton of bricks. Because there’s less distortion, you feel the full impact of her words, which come in strong as she sings, “You’ll have to send a strong goddamn wind to get rid of me.” That delicate longing is also exemplified on “Feather Lighter” and “Radiance,” which cut through some of the heavier parts of the album. Not to say that the darker parts are too much. “Both Sides” makes use of a guitar riff that stutters and spits ominously as Larrabee sings exasperatedly before transitioning into “Burning Bowl,” a sparse track featuring a dull piano tune and a very tired-sounding Larrabee..."
