On Mazes, their debut album, Moon Duo replace live bass and drums with keyboards and primitive sampled beats, but have no problem weaving the same kind of hypnotic trance. If debut full-length Escape was a curiosity, Mazes is contemporary psych gold. ( & Dusted reviews)

Moon Duo are Ripley Johnson (guitarist of Wooden Shjips) and synth-player Sanae Yamada. The title-track from the San Francisco duo’s debut album, ‘Mazes’ is a journey that will sweep you up and take you on a sightseeing tour round the best bits of garage-psychedelia.
The guitar chords are warm and crunchy, the solos are sprawling and the beat comes in the form of a devastatingly understated drum-tambourine combo. Ripley Johnson’s vocals are half-spoken and buried deep in the mix, almost ending up being an embellishment to the solos, instead of the other way around.
The lack of dynamic variety threatens to make the song monotonous, but the propulsive nature of the instrumentation and the way the noise inhabits every corner of your ears ends up making the experience an utterly thrilling one. (
